GutPro® Infant features Bifidobacterium Infantis, "champion colonizer of the infant gut"
If there's one probiotic bacteria newborn infants need in their guts, it's Bifidobacterium infantis.*
This unique bacteria strain dominates in breastfed babies' intestines. And there's a good reason why. B. infantis has evolved with human breast milk to occupy a unique niche in human gut development. It turns out human breast milk contains some unique oligosaccharides. Incredibly difficult and expensive to produce, these complex molecules make up a full third of breast milk's components.
But here's the funny thing . . .
Human babies can't digest them!
So why do human moms make them?
Well, they're the favorite food of Bifidobacterium infantis. In fact, B. infantis is the only bacteria strain, it seems, that can fully digest these unique oligosaccharides.
Thanks to the presence of these nourishing prebiotics in human breast milk, B. infantis thrives in the newborn's digestive tract.
And in exchange, B. infantis performs an invaluable service . . .
In a cohort study in India, B. infantis was linked to healthy growth and immune response in infants.5 While the study cannot prove causation, additional studies have made a clear link between B. infantis and the healthy development of the baby's immune system and digestive system.*
This is particularly critical for pre-term babies, since digestive problems are common. In no less than five clinical trials (see below) on preterm infants, B. infantis supplementation ensured the babies maintained healthy, functioning digestive tracts.
How does B. infantis do this?
- First, they take over. Simply by multiplying and thriving by feasting on the human milk oligosaccharides, they leave little room for unwanted bacteria. They make sure that the digestive ecosystem is a healthy one.
- Secondly, they seem to help babies develop a well-regulated immune system.* Lab research has demonstrated that these special bacteria "coach" the baby's immune cells to regulate themselves with sophistication. B. infantis' presence in the gut seems to inhibit the production of immune cytokines that signal inflammation.*
- Thirdly, B. infantis seems to help a strong and sturdy intestinal lining develop. Without too many gaps between cells. So the intestines can do their job of selectively allowing nutrients to enter the bloodstream.
- Finally, this bacteria strain seems to promote the production of the short chain fatty acid, acetate, over butyrate. While butyrate is good for adults, some studies have linked overproduction of butyrate to digestive problems in infants. By tipping the balance toward acetate, B. infantis seems to help keep the chemical balance in babies' guts healthy.6
With this long-evolved symbiotic relationship between B. infantis and newborn infants, we made sure B. infantis was in our formulation.
And – taking a hint from Nature – we made sure it was a full 50% of the formula.
But that's not all we've included in this carefully developed formula...

B. breve is also a star in the probiotic world when it comes to children who need extra help with their microbiome.* Found in human breast milk, B. breve can also digest human milk oligosaccharides – but not as thoroughly as B. infantis.
It's considered one of the first colonizers of human intestinal tract. And research shows it can help this colonization happen fast.
The research on the various roles this bacteria plays in keeping your child's gut healthy is extensive:
- B. breve has been linked to helping with childhood constipation.*7
- A few clinical trials involving pre-term babies indicated that this special bacteria works especially well in helping to establish a healthy gut ecology.* 8
- In one of these studies, researchers concluded that B. breve also seems to help these tiny babies gain weight.*9
- Clinical research has also demonstrated that when combined with a gluten-free diet, B. breve can help restore microbial balance in the digestive tract of children who have experienced some intestinal inflammation.*10
As children grow older and face health challenges, B. breve continues to bring strategic support . . .
- Clinical research suggests this special bacterium is particularly effective in re-colonizing the gut of children who have undergone chemotherapy.*11 The children who took this probiotic seemed to recover better from the treatment without any complications that are usually associated with chemotherapy.
B. breve is clearly a powerful ally for B. infantis in helping your baby start off with a healthy digestive system. These two lay the foundation for an effective probiotic team.
But we didn't stop there . . .
Contains five additional probiotics proven to keep children healthy
In consultation with parents and health practitioners, we've added five additional probiotic superstars. Each of these strains has been shown to be safe and beneficial for children and infants.
Bifidobacterium longum - One of the first bacteria to colonize our bodies at birth, B. longum has been associated with helping to digest milk and other challenging foods. *12 A placebo-controlled clinical study on 33 children with some digestive discomfort showed that in combination with a gluten-free diet, B. longum not only helped them grow taller, but also showed some indications of keeping their immune system strong and balanced.13
Bifidobacterium lactis - In one eye-opening study, when pre-term babies were given Bifidobacterium lactis after taking antibiotics, they gained an amazing four times as much weight as the babies given the placebo.* And interestingly, these babies gained more weight even though they consumed less milk! In this same study, researchers observed signs that B. lactis helped the babies' immune systems develop effectively.*14
A meta-analysis of five studies revealed that B. lactis' role in supporting healthy weight gain may be particularly effective in the most vulnerable babies. Researchers looking at the data found that this bacterium seemed to help babies born to HIV positive moms gain much more weight per day than their counterparts who were not supplementing with a probiotic.*15
Finally – and significantly – preliminary lab research indicates B. lactis shows exciting promise in neutralizing certain toxins from wheat. *16
Bifidobacterium bifidum – In one small study, B. bifidum was the second most common bacteria in infants' guts (B. infantis was first).17 And for good reason . . . It seems to help keep the immune system strong and help the digestive system stay right on track.*
A 2015 clinical study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed B. bifidum helped academically stressed college students make it through the winter semester. The students who took B. bifidum had much fewer absences than the students who didn't take the probiotic.18 Another clinical study indicates B. bifidum may help with abdominal discomfort, gas and bloating.*19 And a recent randomized placebo-controlled study also showed that B. bifidum can help with stress-related diarrhea.*20
Lactobacillus salivarius - Several clinical trials on both adults and children indicate that l. salivarius seems to help regulate the immune system and - as a result- support healthy skin.*21 L. salivarius also seems to play a distinct role in keeping the microbial population in your mouth healthy.*22
Lactobacillus gasseri - A clinical trial on children with L. gasseri published in the European journal, Pediatric Allergy And Immunology showed that this bacterium seemed to help regulate the immune system*. Children who took L. gasseri showed an increase in regulatory T cell counts and a decrease in immunoglobulin E.23Preliminary research on mice indicates that L. gasseri may inhibit inflammation signaling at the genetic level!24
You can see all the good strains we've included in this mix to help your baby get the right start, or to help your older children stay on track.
But it's not just what we've put in this mix that counts. It's also what we've left out!
Does not contain strains linked to d-lactate acidosis
Lactobacillus acidophilus can work wonders in the gut by producing lactic acid. It also can cause problems.
Lactate is a derivative of lactic acid. It comes in two isomeric forms, d-lactate and l-lactate. Most of us have the capacity to metabolize both forms to some extent and turn it into pyruvic acid.
But for various reasons, some people can't metabolize d-lactate effectively enough to keep up the d-lactate produced by gut bacteria. As a result, the d-lactate can build up in your body and cause d-lactate acidosis.25
To date, d-lactate acidosis has not been widely documented as a common problem in infants. However, many health professionals are concerned that it could be an issue with developing digestive tracts. For this reason, we've decided to keep these questionable strains out of our infant formulation.
GutPro® Infant probiotics does not contain any strain linked to d-lactate production or d-lactate acidosis. So you don't have to worry about this becoming a problem for your baby.
But that's not the only problem we've avoided with this formula.
No histamine-producing probiotics
D-lactate producing probiotics aren't the only troublesome strains. Some probiotics, like L. casei, produce histamines. Histamines are chemicals that can trigger an immune response.
Ordinarily, your body breaks these molecules down with special enzymes, primarily diamine oxidase (DAO). However, some people don't produce enough of these enzymes. Or their body produces too many histamines for their enzymes to break down adequately.
Their body then reacts to the build-up of histamines. These reactions can include dizziness, headaches, rashes, congestion and digestive discomfort. When your body has these kinds of reactions, it's called a histamine intolerance.
Most reports of histamine intolerance are in adults. However, an increasing number of parents are identifying this as a problem they're seeing in their children.26 Most of this is anecdotal - there isn't much research documenting this in babies and children. Nonetheless, we decided to make sure this probiotic blend took this emerging problem into account.
So we've made sure that the strains included in this formula are either histamine-neutral or histamine-degrading.
That means you won't have to worry about increasing your children's exposure to histamines when you give them this probiotic formula.
Further, we've kept more irritants out of our formula...
No spore-producing bacteria or streptococcus thermophilus
For people concerned about spore-producing Bacillus bacteria or Streptococcus thermophilus (e.g. soil bacteria), we've made sure to keep these strains out as well.
While the research is still ongoing about the impact these strains have on our systems, we decided to play it safe and keep our formula simple and easy on the most sensitive bodies.
But of course, it's not just the probiotic strains you need to consider. Most probiotics supplements are only 10% to 20% probiotics and 80% to 90% something else.
GutPro® Infant is just probiotics – Nothing else!
We've kept this a pure probiotic formula.
- There are no excipients or fillers like silica or magnesium stearate.
- Nor are there any prebiotics like inulin or FOS.
Breast milk already has its own unique prebiotics. And prebiotics have been added to infant formulas with beneficial effects. But bottom line, we want parents to be able to carefully develop their children's diets according to their unique situations. We'd rather you have the choice to bring prebiotics in or - or not.
