Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil

The Vikings' secret "gold of the ocean"

Rosita's wild-caught, handcrafted Ratfish Liver Oil is an ancient whole food derived from the liver of Chimaera monstrosa, also known as the ratfish. The Norwegian vikings and Scandinavian fishermen regarded ratfish liver oil as a precious gift from the sea, ranking it above all other fish liver oils.* Its rarity and exceptional properties were a major reason they called it the "Gold of the ocean."

Shipping Info

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil is shipped without cold packs or dry ice. Please note it is perfectly fine if your bottle arrives warm or hot because the oil naturally contains more than 33% alkylglycerol content, which is a natural antioxidant. No additional antioxidants are added into the oil, as the ratfish produces and stores its own vitamin E, which also helps preserve the freshness.

Frequently asked questions

Ratfish liver oil is derived from the liver of a little known group of shark relatives known as the Chimaeras (Chimaera monstrosa Linnaeus; Common name: Ratfish, Rabbitfish or Ghost shark). Chimaera takes its name from the Greek chimaera, a mythical monster with the head of a lion, body of a goat, and the tail of a dragon. It is the offspring of Echinda and Typhon.

The Chimaeras are a very primitive group of fish, with skeletons composed of cartilage instead of bone, dating back for more than 300 million years. They are true survivors from before the dinosaurs, and have changed very little since. They may actually be the oldest and most enigmatic groups of fishes alive today. Truly an ancient living fossil!

The ratfish is an extraordinary fish found in all the world's oceans, close to the bottom, at depths of 300–500 meters, with a reported maximum depth of 1,663 meters. These fish are almost half shark and half ray, with smooth skin, big sparkling green eyes designed to see in the dark depths, a rabbit-like face, and a small mouth surrounded by large lips. The nose of the ratfish is studded with electric sensors able to detect the faint electrical signals given off whenever bottom dwelling prey – including crabs, snails, starfish, marine worms, urchins, clams, shrimp, and small fish – use their muscles, and sensitive enough to detect their heartbeats. Their bodies taper to an exceptionally long threadlike tail, and together with their rodent-like teeth designed for crushing the shells of their prey, has earned them the common name "ratfish."

There is very limited fishing for this species of fish, which are not a popular food source, although they are edible and their white meat is tasteful. However, following the removal of the liver, head, and all the innards, there is actually less than 10% left for use as a food source. A major reason for this is the size of the liver, which makes up a large proportion of the total mass of the fish.

The liver of the ratfish is very large, constituting approximately 60% of its total body weight, and contains an exceedingly high proportion of oil. The oil content is around 60%, but can in some instances be as high as 80% of the wet liver weight. The large oily liver plays an important role in the maintenance of neutral buoyancy.

Ratfish liver oil is one of the finest antioxidant lubricants known, having been used for guns and fine delicate instruments. Some of the old time fishermen used to save ratfish and use the liver oil as a lubricant and rust preventer. It is extremely stable compared to most fish oils and fish liver oils, and has characteristics in common with Sperm whale oil, which was used as a lubricant for the finest pocket watches. NASA even considered ratfish liver oil as a good substitute for Sperm whale oil, which was used as a lubricant in their space program.

The oils from the ratfish were also used topically, and consumed orally, by the Norwegian Vikings and Scandinavian fishermen for centuries, who regarded this oil as a rare and very special gift from the ocean, ranking it above all other fish liver oils.

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil™ contains safe levels of the active form of vitamin A (also called retinol or preformed vitamin A). Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil™ also contains natural vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), rather than vitamin D(ergocalciferol or pre-vitamin D).

The body also manufactures vitamin Dfrom cholesterol, through a process triggered by the action of sunlight on the skin. Very few foods naturally contain vitamin D3. Good sources include fish liver oil and fatty fish such as salmon. Other fish species including other species of cod do not contain measurable amounts of natural vitamin D3.

Vitamin D3 health benefits

Exciting research has shown that many of the body's organs and tissues have 'vitamin D receptors.' These are sites within our bodies where vitamin D is able to attach itself, and exert its positive health effects. It is little wonder therefore that research has recognized the benefit of this vitamin in promoting health effects on our hearts, immune systems and brains. A growing body of evidence indicates that vitamin D may help to:

  • Improve muscle strength.
  • Improve bone health and reduce the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
  • Support normal blood pressure levels and prevent artery damage.
  • Reduce the risk of heart attack, heart failure, sudden cardiac death, stroke, overall cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular death.
  • Reduce the risk of colon and other cancers.
  • Support the immune system, and as a result, reduce the risk of autoimmune diseases including type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and others; and boost the body's defenses to fight infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and seasonal flu.

Low ratio of vitamin A to vitamin D

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil™ has a naturally low ratio of vitamin A to vitamin D. This low ratio is truly unique among fish liver oils.

Research suggests that a low ratio may allow vitamin D to exert its full protective physiological effects within the body.

Vitamin E

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil™ contains alpha-tocopherol, the biologically and chemically most active form of vitamin E, and by far the most abundant lipid-soluble antioxidant in humans.

The primary function of alpha-tocopherol in humans appears to be that of an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals are nasty chemicals capable of damaging cells and genetic material. Free radicals are generated primarily when the body turns food into energy, and also by sunlight's action on the skin and eyes. Others are in the food you eat and the air you breathe.

Alpha-tocopherol is an important and potent cell membrane antioxidant. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are an integral part of all cell membranes, and vital for normal cell function. Free radicals are capable of reacting with these fatty acids and causing lipid peroxidation, membrane injury, and cell death. Alpha-tocopherol helps to prevent lipid peroxidation by neutralizing free radicals, preventing the propagation of free radical damage in membranes. It therefore helps to maintain the integrity of cell membranes. It also helps to protect the fats in circulating low-density lipoprotein (LDL, sometimes called bad cholesterol) molecules from oxidation. Oxidized LDL is more likely to get trapped in an artery wall and is now regarded as a prime inducer of cardiovascular disease.

Additionally, alpha-tocopherol has been shown to help maintain immune cell function, enhance aspects of the immune response that appear to decline in old age, enhance vasodilatation (relaxation of blood vessels so blood flows easily), and help prevent the formation of blood clots that could lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Yes, ratfish are bottom feeders residing at depths of up to 2,000 meters.  Crude ratfish liver oil (directly from the liver) does test above the EU limits for contaminants, and it is not advisable to consume it, even for those in Norway who are able to obtain fresh ratfish livers.

Rosita uses a proprietary process that attracts contaminants like a magnet using materials from the ocean.  Unlike most fish liver oil producers, who use molecular distillation (high heat) to remove/reduce contaminants, a process that destroys precious vitamins A and D, the Rosita process does not damage the vitamins but keeps them intact just as they are in the ratfish's liver.  Once the ratfish oil has passed through the contaminant filter, it tests below the strict EU guidelines.  It is important to keep in mind that no fish you eat (nor, for that matter, any beef, chicken, or pork) is completely free of dioxins and contaminants unless it is highly processed, which destroys the nutrients.

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil is a full spectrum fish liver oil. Unlike refined fish oils, Rosita contains many different fatty acids that thicken and separate when refrigerated. When chilled, the stearins, waxes and triglycerides may appear as particles, as a film, cloudy, or thick like gelatin. This is normal for a fresh, wild and raw fish liver oil. You may take the oils out of the fridge three to five minutes before use to allow them to evenly mix and to permit the efficient use of the dropper.

Amazing!!!!

My wife and I have been using this product for a little over a year and we have seen a great improvement in our overall health, both mentally and physically. Living in the pacific northwest of the United States, we do not see much of the sun during the winter months and have lots of rain. This product, after it had built up in our system, assisted us with having a more positive and optimistic mindset and we noticed overall less anxiety and depression during the rainy months. I used to struggle with severe seasonal depression. I have to be honest and say this is the first winter I am NOT having any seasonal depression symptoms. In terms of physical health, both my wife and I feel more energetic, less fatigued, have better and deeper sleep, and shorter colds/flu episodes. As a nurse, I am always worried when flu season comes around. This year I noticed that my cold was A LOT shorter and easier to manage, meaning less days of work lost!! Yay! We also noticed better concentration on our day to day tasks and stronger memory retention. My wife used to struggle with a mild case of ADD, however, stated that her ADD symptoms have slowly become more manageable WITHOUT any pharmaceuticals. We both were able to avoid starting any antidepressants because of this product. We absolutely love it! AND we even give a drop or two a week to both our cat and dog. They are happy and healthy, full of energy after the drop is given. We have now upgraded to the 50mL bottle and between my wife and I (taking about 3 to 4 drops daily) it lasts us a FEW MONTHS! This is the best investment anyone can make towards bettering their health! Thank you for this product! Sincerely, Super happy customer :)

Dear Anya, Wow! What an incredible review! How wonderful that Rosita Extra Virgin Ratfish Liver Oil has been so supportive of your health and that of your wife - and even your pets! Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of this great information about your experience. It's fantastic news that you found Rosita to help support you during those rainy winter months in the Pacific Northwest; that you've given it time to build up in your system and that you're noticing a difference in your moods (your positive, optimistic mindset and less anxiety) all the way to not having your usual seasonal depression. That's huge! How great that you're sleeping better and experiencing shorter durations of the cold and flu, especially with you being a nurse. And fabulous about the concentration and memory retention, and your wife being able to manager her mild ADD without pharmaceuticals. The good news keeps coming! It's also good to hear that your 3 to 4 drops per serving are enough for you (a little goes a long way) and so your bottle is lasting you months at a time for an economical price :) Because it’s unprocessed and pure — and hails from the amazing, 400-million-year-old species of ratfish in the pristine Norwegian seas — Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil contains a vibrant, naturally-occurring nutrient profile that has many health properties, as you and your wife have experienced. We're honored to serve you, Anya and we thank you again for this thoughtful review! Warm regards, The Corganic Team

Powerfull Oil

Love this product. Very potent. Have used the 'orange' Brand in the past -a quality product as well. However this Rosita Rat Fish oil is in a category all its own, vastly superior. If you are on the fence because of price; make the leap, live your best life this time around. Best regards, Ryan.

Hello Ryan! Thank you so much for your five-star review and for sharing your experience with Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil. We're thrilled to hear that you're loving it and finding it superior to other brands. As to the other brand you mentioned, it looks like that one is fermented skate liver oil, which is created using heavy processing and comprised of skate, which is a different species than the ratfish. Like you, people gravitate toward Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil because it's fresh, wild-caught and raw. That means it's completely unprocessed and therefore retains all of the abundant nutrients that nature gave it, and all from the ratfish itself (chimaera monstrosa). We are so glad that you are living your best life and so very grateful to serve you :) Warm regards, The Corganic Team

Outstanding product!

I’ve been using this oil for about 5 months. I even stopped for a month to see if I was imagining the great results (my teeth began to hurt within 5 days). The strengthening of my teeth is undeniable. I’m very grateful to have found this product at such a high quality. And I really don’t mind the taste at all.
