Storage/Dosage

An initial dose of 10-12 drops twice a day for a period of 6 weeks, followed by a maintenance dose of 8-10 drops daily. The oil can also be used topically for wounds or as a very special and unique ancient skin elixir.

Consult with your physician before using doses substantially higher than recommended, or taking this product if you are pregnant or lactating, diabetic, allergic to fish or iodine, using blood thinners, anticipate surgery, have a diagnosed cardiovascular condition, bleeding or immune system disorder. Keep out of reach of children.

If you or your child has never consumed fish or fish oil, or if you suspect a food allergy, consult your doctor prior to using a fish body oil/fish liver oil product. Ratfish liver oil is derived from the liver of a little known group of shark relatives known as the Chimaeras (Chimaera monstrosa Linnaeus; Common name: Ratfish, Rabbitfish or Ghost shark). Chimaera takes its name from the Greek chimaera, a mythical monster with the head of a lion, body of a goat, and the tail of a dragon. It is the offspring of Echinda and Typhon.

The Chimaeras are a very primitive group of fish, with skeletons composed of cartilage instead of bone, dating back for more than 300 million years. They are true survivors from before the dinosaurs, and have changed very little since. They may actually be the oldest and most enigmatic groups of fishes alive today. Truly an ancient living fossil!

The ratfish is an extraordinary fish found in all the world's oceans, close to the bottom, at depths of 300–500 meters, with a reported maximum depth of 1,663 meters. These fish are almost half shark and half ray, with smooth skin, big sparkling green eyes designed to see in the dark depths, a rabbit-like face, and a small mouth surrounded by large lips. The nose of the ratfish is studded with electric sensors able to detect the faint electrical signals given off whenever bottom dwelling prey – including crabs, snails, starfish, marine worms, urchins, clams, shrimp, and small fish – use their muscles, and sensitive enough to detect their heartbeats. Their bodies taper to an exceptionally long threadlike tail, and together with their rodent-like teeth designed for crushing the shells of their prey, has earned them the common name "ratfish."

There is very limited fishing for this species of fish, which are not a popular food source, although they are edible and their white meat is tasteful. However, following the removal of the liver, head, and all the innards, there is actually less than 10% left for use as a food source. A major reason for this is the size of the liver, which makes up a large proportion of the total mass of the fish.

The liver of the ratfish is very large, constituting approximately 60% of its total body weight, and contains an exceedingly high proportion of oil. The oil content is around 60%, but can in some instances be as high as 80% of the wet liver weight. The large oily liver plays an important role in the maintenance of neutral buoyancy.

Ratfish liver oil is one of the finest antioxidant lubricants known, having been used for guns and fine delicate instruments. Some of the old time fishermen used to save ratfish and use the liver oil as a lubricant and rust preventer. It is extremely stable compared to most fish oils and fish liver oils, and has characteristics in common with Sperm whale oil, which was used as a lubricant for the finest pocket watches. NASA even considered ratfish liver oil as a good substitute for Sperm whale oil, which was used as a lubricant in their space program.

The oils from the ratfish were also used topically, and consumed orally, by the Norwegian Vikings and Scandinavian fishermen for centuries, who regarded this oil as a rare and very special gift from the ocean, ranking it above all other fish liver oils.

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil™ contains safe levels of the active form of vitamin A (also called retinol or preformed vitamin A). Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil™ also contains natural vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), rather than vitamin D(ergocalciferol or pre-vitamin D).

The body also manufactures vitamin Dfrom cholesterol, through a process triggered by the action of sunlight on the skin. Very few foods naturally contain vitamin D3. Good sources include fish liver oil and fatty fish such as salmon. Other fish species including other species of cod do not contain measurable amounts of natural vitamin D3.

Low ratio of vitamin A to vitamin D

Research suggests that a low ratio may allow vitamin D to exert its full protective physiological effects within the body.

Vitamin E

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil™ contains alpha-tocopherol, the biologically and chemically most active form of vitamin E, and by far the most abundant lipid-soluble antioxidant in humans.

The primary function of alpha-tocopherol in humans appears to be that of an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals are nasty chemicals capable of damaging cells and genetic material. Free radicals are generated primarily when the body turns food into energy, and also by sunlight's action on the skin and eyes. Others are in the food you eat and the air you breathe.

Alpha-tocopherol is an important and potent cell membrane antioxidant. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are an integral part of all cell membranes, and vital for normal cell function. Free radicals are capable of reacting with these fatty acids and causing lipid peroxidation, membrane injury, and cell death. Alpha-tocopherol helps to prevent lipid peroxidation by neutralizing free radicals, preventing the propagation of free radical damage in membranes. It therefore helps to maintain the integrity of cell membranes. It also helps to protect the fats in circulating low-density lipoprotein (LDL, sometimes called bad cholesterol) molecules from oxidation. Oxidized LDL is more likely to get trapped in an artery wall and is now regarded as a prime inducer of cardiovascular disease.

Additionally, alpha-tocopherol has been shown to help maintain immune cell function, enhance aspects of the immune response that appear to decline in old age, enhance vasodilatation (relaxation of blood vessels so blood flows easily), and help prevent the formation of blood clots that could lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Yes, ratfish are bottom feeders residing at depths of up to 2,000 meters.  Crude ratfish liver oil (directly from the liver) does test above the EU limits for contaminants, and it is not advisable to consume it, even for those in Norway who are able to obtain fresh ratfish livers.

Rosita uses a proprietary process that attracts contaminants like a magnet using materials from the ocean.  Unlike most fish liver oil producers, who use molecular distillation (high heat) to remove/reduce contaminants, a process that destroys precious vitamins A and D, the Rosita process does not damage the vitamins but keeps them intact just as they are in the ratfish's liver.  Once the ratfish oil has passed through the contaminant filter, it tests below the strict EU guidelines.  It is important to keep in mind that no fish you eat (nor, for that matter, any beef, chicken, or pork) is completely free of dioxins and contaminants unless it is highly processed, which destroys the nutrients.

Not for everybody but very helpful

So the taste can be overwhelming but if you get passed it, it has helped me a lot. I have felt increased energy, easier more natural poops, and I've lost a few lbs. I only take it every 3 days, 5 drops. I also take the cod liver oil at the same time! If you can muster the taste, I highly suggest it.

Almost tasteless

Ratfish oil is remarkably palatable. No heavy fish taste. I have only taken half a dropper for the last few days but will report on the health effects after a month.
